No new jits, sad day

Well it’s annoying beyond reason but i have not trained bjj since Monday. This is my last week at work and I’m working doubles all week. Usually that wouldn’t stop me but i’ve been having issues with sleep since….well forever really but since i left my last gym its been getting worse and worse. Again, lack of sleep has never kept me from training before but these 12 hour shifts are killing me.

This week we were having a “study hall” while both of our professors are in Europe on a kick ass tour of several of the Gracie Barra gyms throughout France, England and Hungry….i think that’s it. Any how, on Monday we worked some basic half guard passes for a much less experienced person at the gym. When I and the other two guys worked together we worked on some stuff from the spider guard. Triangle, Omoplata and a sweep.

We rolled which was supposed to be easy but it never is. Only on the new girl but dealing with two ex military guys, it always starts a little easy but it always ends in us trying to kill each other. I Do miss the other gym, i felt like every time i rolled there it was a learning experience. Everyone one of them was a blue or purple belt. At Gracie Barra there is only one blue belt with the morning group and the other guy is a two stripe white belt. Rolling there is awesome because I actually have a chance. I can actually get and keep dominant positions. It’s a bit of a confidence booster….of course I’m still tiny compared to both of them so i have not been able to sub either but all the same, it’s a nice change of pace.

I thought about competing on the tenth but i realized that i would be doing it for the wrong reasons. I felt like instead of feeding the passion i have for the sport, and of doing it for fun, i would be doing to prove something to my old gym. I am just going to train lightly not to risk injury until boot camp. I already had a set back, and taking care of it on my own dime was a bitch, so its time to play it safe until i have health care again.

I have managed to maintain my conditioning though, Its easier to work on because i can do it anytime. I worked on my pullups, doing 4 sets of 4 different variations then i did a Arm/leg AMRAP that consisted of dead lifts, dips, pushups, and crossover box burpees….(i dont know if that is the real name for it) for 10 min then i worked my abs for another 10 min.
I ship out for the corps on the 19th and I’m more ready than I’ve ever been.

Jitz for the week July 22-27

As it turns out, its hard to write every day when you’re working 50 hours a week and still finding time to train Jiujitsu every day and trying to run or lift every other day.  So for this post I’m just going to sum up the week but first, a little about me:

I am a no stripe white belt who four months ago was a four stripe white belt on the verge of being promoted to blue belt but then i badly hurt my knee……so bad that for two months straight, i was worried i wouldn’t even be able to walk normally again. But a strait month of yoga and rehab and i was able to jog again. One month after that i was rolling and only having a twinge of pain now and then. Also, this is when i started training at the newer gym.  As of right now Ive been training at the new gym for a little over a month.

All this week my professor has been getting creative with warm ups, adding suicides and grip strengthening exercises and other random conditioning exercises.  We haven’t done much work on technique lately, instead we have been rolling longer and more frequently. On Monday we did work on headlock escapes which was helpful but i didn’t get to drill it as much as i would have liked. I do like the rolling but to be honest, I do wish i could just drill the hell out of a few things for a few weeks.

None of the rolls where particularly memorable. I roll with the same few people most of the time. One of the guys, a three stripe white belt, who is also ex-air force spec ops. Freakishly strong, virtually every time we roll consist of me holding on to guard, him breaking out of it, me putting him into half guard, then recovering full guard. All the while fighting his attempts at a collar choke that he is getting better and better at.  I was able to put him in a triangle before the bell rang and i went onto the next training partner. After every practice i always drag somebody into helping me drill a few triangle chokes from different set ups.

The only thing big that happened this week over all is that i came to the conclusion that i wont compete again until i figure out where I’m going to be after boot camp. I’ve made some decent friends out of my new gym and i don’t thing i would feel right competing against friends from either gym. I also know that in boot camp I’m probably going to loose all the muscle memory that i had to fight to get back in the first place so whats the point in competing right now?

On Wednesday night i did hill sprints:

4* 30 meters and 6*120 meters, all with a jog back  as a recovery and a 20 min easy run as a cool down.

Oh yeah, and i bought a freaking awesome Hyabusa rash guard. Yay me!

workout monday july 22, 2013

You know, consciously I know there is no one out there to teach basic gym etiquette to the masses, but some of it you’d  think should be self explanatory. For example, don’t leave a towel hanging on equipment you are not using. Don’t use the squat rack for curls. Or, in the case of what happened tonight, don’t take the equipment away from where I was using it when I step away from it for less than 20 seconds. I forgive it without much thought, only because I like being creative with my workouts (and when a relatively attractive blonde takes something from you it lessens the irritation).  Anyhow, today’s workout:

Chin up ladder as a warm up, up to 5, then 4 rounds of 5 reps and 2 of 4

I moved on to my circuits, which are gradually becoming AMRAPs (as many rounds as possible):

The first part looked like this:

5 reps Deadlift at 110 pounds (I know, weak ass legs)

10 reps TRX Pushups

Kettle bell snatches (10L and 10R)

10 reps curl and press with 25 lb. dumbbells

10 reps burpee with a box jump

I completed 3 rounds before the blonde took my box, so I changed it to regular burpees, and I did the circuit for 15 minutes. I wanted to do more, but I was winded and got out of work late so I didn’t feel like pushing myself excessively .  I did some abs and some sprints and finished it off with a protein shake and two bananas. All in all a good night. Still a tad pissed I had to miss jiujitsu this morning but oh well, life comes first right?

It was a slow day at work, so I got to go by one of the two jiujitsu schools I attend. The reason why I go to two different ones has to do with convenience, as my job is by one and my home is by the other. There are other reasons but I won’t go into them, at least not now. Only to say that the place by my work took me in when I need an outlet,  and I am grateful for that. It’s a plus that one of the two black belts at the gym is a ridiculously attractive Brazilian woman and the other is a friendly guy who I get to practice my French with.
